Since William the Conqueror built the first castle in 1080, its proximity to both London and the old royal hunting forest (now Windsor Great Park) made it popular as a royal residence.

The Cotswolds are centred on the gentle slopes of the Cotswolds Hills and are officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the largest in England and Wales, and made up from parts of the English Counties of Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Somerset.
We also include the county of Herefordshire.

The ancient towns & villages are steeped in history and many date back at least 500 to 600 years and are one of the most popular reasons for tourists visiting the Cotswolds region.

The town of Stratford upon Avon is located north of the Cotswold limestone belt and beside the River Avon. The town does not pretend to be a Cotswold town but it is an important gateway to the Cotswolds. See The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where the Bard's plays are performed for the majority of the year. Take a look at the cursed tombstone at the Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried. Visit the old 15th century grammar school, where Shakespeare was educated. You also will enjoy a lovely tour through the scenic Warwickshire countryside, visiting Wilmcote, the village where Mary Arden's (Shakespeare's mother) house can be found.
